The North American Hair Research Society's mission is:

The mission of the National Institute of Arthritis, Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases is to support research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of those diseases, the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research, and the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases to the public.
Almost every household in America is affected in some way by diseases of bones, joints, muscles, and skin -- from Arthritis to Hair Loss. These diseases affect people of all ages, racial and ethnic populations, and economic strata. Many of the diseases affect women and minorities disproportionately.
We believe that support of research in bones, muscles, joints, and skin will result in scientific progress and improved health for the public. A critical element in our mandate is the education of future scientists who will continue to increase our understanding of these tissues and the diseases that affect them.

The mission of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation (NAAF) is to support research to find a cure or acceptable treatment for alopecia areata, to support those with the disease, and to educate the public about alopecia areata.
Alopecia areata (al-oh-PEE-shah air-ee-AH-tah) is a highly unpredictable, autoimmune skin disease resulting in the loss of hair on the scalp and elsewhere on the body. This common but very challenging and capricious disease affects more than 5 million people in the United States alone. Due to the fact that much of the public is still not familiar with alopecia areata, the disease can have a profound impact on one's life and functional status, both at work and at school.
Our mission at NAAF is accomplished by:
* Funding research and research workshops that add to the scientific knowledge about alopecia areata, its causes, and different treatments
* Providing local support and education for people with alopecia areata and their families

And the cost of drugs that must be taken continuously adds up to a large lifetime expense. In the future, as physicians and scientists gain a better understanding of how the normal hair growth cycle is controlled, and how various disease conditions affect hair growth, new medicines will be developed that more effectively target the cause of the hair loss, and cause fewer side effects as a result.
